Frequently Asked Questions

  • Are you available for private sessions?

Yes, I teach private yoga sessions on Mondays and Tuesdays each week except when I am travelling to train teachers or leading retreats. I also teach private and semi private sessions via Skype. If you are not from Calgary, and are unable to travel to Calgary, all you need is a space, and a webcam that will film your entire body.
  • Where do I find that black foam strip?

I use the spinal strip extensively in my sessions and trainings, and I write about it in “Anatomy of the Shoulder Girdle”, “Therapeutic Yoga for Shoulders and Hips” and in a few of the podcasts. You can purchase it at in our store. Click on the link here.

  • How did you come to create customized yoga therapy?

The process was quite organic. While I was teaching my group yoga class, I could see that one person needed pigeon pose for their hips, whereas for another person, pigeon would have blown out their knees, and yet another needed to work on their shoulders in order to release their hips. Quite quickly I was creating a program per person in a larger group setting. The results were quite remarkable. People get better faster, and progress quite quickly.

Now that I teach private sessions, I offer customized yoga sessions during all of my shorter afternoon style retreats and longer 2 and 3 day retreats.

  • How do you practice, what is your practice?

I practice daily - a yoga asana practice, a breathing practice and a meditation practice. People ask me how I have the time. For me, my practice is as important as brushing my teeth. It reconnects me to my inner knowing and enables me to be more present and in the moment. My day always works better when I do my practice.
  • How did you get into yoga?

I had been an athlete all my life, and in my late teens started to become injured. As I reached 24 yrs old, my sprained ankles, sore shoulders, and iliotibial band syndrome had become “normal”. My back was always tight. A friend suggested yoga, so I went. . .Quite unwillingly, I might add . . . but nothing else was having long lasting effects, so why not, there was nothing to lose. It was love at first practice. I started in January, and in April I ran a 10 K race - I had no back pain, no iliotibial band pain, no knee pain, no foot pain. It was a great run, the best run I had had in 2 years. Then, in May I hiked through the Swiss Alps. Yoga was my ticket to understanding the links between my body, breath, thoughts, and mental state.
  • These days, do you do other activity besides yoga?

Yes, I love movement. My current loves are downhill skiing, cross country skiing, swimming, hiking, walking, running, scuba diving.
  • What is your training?

I studied Kinesiology and have a BSc. from the University of Victoria. My initial yoga teacher training was with the Yoga Studio (now the Yoga College of Canada), and from Dr. Karandikar from Kabir Baug in Pune, India. My initial research-based mind-body medical training was with Dr. James Gordon, MD in the US. I’ve deepened my yoga knowledge with Pandit Dabral, Richard Miller and many asana-based yoga teachers. I still have a number of mentors in the anatomy, yoga, psychological worlds who I consult with. Every mentor and teacher has something to offer, and I am always learning. I love to read, and have a few translations of Hatha Yoga Pradikipa, Bhagavad Gita, as well as Anatomy books on my table.
  • I am interested in becoming a yoga teacher, how do I do it?

There are many excellent 200 and 500 hr teacher trainings available - in all parts of the world. While all programs registered with Yoga Alliance meet the minimum requirements necessary to be a yoga teacher, each has its focus, so find the program that really meets your needs. Some people want more philosphy, others want more anatomy...Yoga teacher trainings come in all different shapes and sizes, just choose the one that fits. One tip - before embarking on your yoga teacher journey, practice yoga consistently and regularly for at least one year, and preferably two.

If you are interested in Therapeutic Yoga Training, this type of training typically occurs after your basic level teacher training. There are about 24 programs offered in North America, and others in Australia, Europe and the UK. I teach an apprentised based program that is one year in length and requires over 500 hour of training.
