From Chronic Pain to Easy Living

"Not long ago pain was a way of life. Getting out of bed, stepping into a car or just turning my head were major challenges. Then one day, someone suggested Functional Synergy's yoga and my life changed. Pain is now a vague memory of the past that I am quite happy to leave behind." - C.G

Flow Fact: With a consistent focus on breathing, relaxing and gentle movement, pain associated with a chronic condition can be managed and eliminated.

Accolades for Functional Synergy

Dear Lovely Ladies of Yoga,

When I approached your studio I had been suffering from pain in my lower back for a couple of years. It was a paddling injury that hadn't been showing much improvement. Last summer when I wasn't able to swing a bat or a golf club or even run to first base I began a fitness routine to try to fix my back. I couldn't run because the impact of my feet hitting the ground would jar my back. Over the course of the next few months I was able to improve my conditioning such that running no longer presented a problem. But there was a constant lingering pain in my back that would haunt me every hour of every day. Even worse, I wasn't able to play around with and fool around with my niece and nephew or with kids of friends.

A friend had suggested a hot yoga studio indicating that yoga could probably help me. Having a back injury I was, naturally, nervous about the program and had voiced my concerns to the instructors. Their blank stares should have been my first warning. Their lack of understanding of back injuries should have been evident when they told me to just do what feels comfortable and if things start to hurt than back off. Back injuries aren't like sprains or stretched ligaments where you can back off when it starts to hurt. Usually it just takes some slight movement and "SNAP" instantaneously you're back to invalid status. Well, that's what happened to me. One posture my back just went snap! I couldn't even stand up straight to walk out of the studio.

But I could recognize the benefit of yoga and I began the process of seeing if any studios around town offered a more physiotherapy style of yoga rather than a trendy cattlecar "do it for sport and health" type of studio. Eventually I discovered your studio.

Instructors with Kinesiology training and programs specifically designed for people with back injuries immediately held my interest. The fact that the studio is intimate and the instructors could offer more one-on-one time as well as modify postures according to individuals was a definite selling feature.

Suzette, my instructor, has been wonderful! From breathing to relaxation and stretching to balance she's been able to gear a program where a real and noticeable difference can be felt in my back just four weeks into the program. I wasn't expecting such a fast improvement. It took years for me to put wear and tear on my back so I wasn't expecting it to be an easy process.

But the real telling tale was spending a weekend with my niece and nephew (only 2 and 3). I was able to play around with them and run and jump and have them crawl all over me. One particular activity they enjoyed was to have me sit down on the floor with my legs extended. They would lay down on my legs with their head at my feet and their legs at my stomach. I would fall backwards to the floor and kick up with my legs flinging them into my welcoming arms as I caught them before they landed on my face and floor. Their smiles and giggles probably provided me with more entertainment and satisfaction than my flinging provided to them.

I was doing this repeatedly all weekend. My back handled it perfectly! There were a couple of twitches and I still have work to do but there wasn't anything crippling. I couldn't believe the change. This is exactly what I wanted to be able to do - to play with my niece and nephew and kids of friends without having to do so from the confines of a chair.

There have been some other added side benefits not talked about. And those were also a pleasant surprise and most welcome. I absolutely believe in your program and your studio. Suzette has been able to accurately assess my situation and modify my program as necessary. She has been able to keep me progressing along. I had no hesitation, at all, in signing up for another session and to keep at it.

Ball season starts soon and the golf courses will be open soon. Last year the crack of the bat and the ping of the golf ball were missing. Not so this year!

I have the the Functional Synergy studio and my instructor Suzette to thank for that! You can't imagine how grateful I am and how important having the flexibility to play and jump around means to me. Thank you so very much!
