I Love Anatomy – Across the Globe

Meet our online training participant: Esther is a yoga teacher based in Australia

Her wish list:

  • to use more effective cues when teaching yoga, taking into account different abilities.
  • to develop a better understanding of human anatomy, specifically as it applies to yoga.
  • to gain a better understanding of how things work and what it looks like if something isn’t working so well
  • to improve her knowledge of anatomy and apply it to asana, so I can be more observant of my students and serve their needs in a more effective manner.
  • to understanding of what and how structures and muscles are moving in the body during yoga asanas

What she completed at Functional Synergy:

  • I Love Anatomy Online Training

What she learned that transformed her practice:

  • That we constantly use compensatory movements without being aware of it.
  • That she hasn’t been moving within her own range of movement during her years of yoga, and this has caused imbalances between muscle groups and ligaments.

Meet Esther today:

This training has allowed me to grow as a yoga teacher, to cue appropriately and allow for a more mindful practice.

I had an amazing session today with a lady who’d had achilles surgery some months ago. She said she’d felt that her progress had halted even though she was practicing her physiotherapy exercises. We went through the sequence using pure movement – she was very surprised how it made so much difference to her executing the exercises. She was a very happy camper 75 minutes later! – Esther

Understanding the Mechanics of Movement

Meet our Yoga Therapy Client: Ray is a 58 year old engineer in a high stress, senior management position. He has 3 adult children. In 1993, he ruptured a disc in his neck. He had surgery but this was followed by 8 years of pain where he could barely walk. In his words, “life was over for me”. He met his physiotherapist at the 8 year mark and she did more him in 20 minutes than any treatment over the previous 8 years. After 5 years of working with the physiotherapist, Ray was referred to Susi for an exercise program.

His wish list:

  • to get stronger.
  • to be able to hike again.
  • to be able to “live”.

What he learned that transformed his recovery process:

  • If it hurts – don’t do it.
  • The mechanics of the body. Susi can speak to me in my language as an engineer, she takes apart the basics and puts it together in a very tangible way so that I understand it and can apply it.
  • I understand the what my body is saying, what the sensations mean and what they are telling me.

Meet Ray today:

There was one day a few years ago where I woke up and had no pain, no muscle spasms or cramps. I was finally pain free. I now hike 20 km in the mountains.

Susi solves problems that western medicine can’t solve. Her unique gift is she is able to encourage and make changes when she knows I am ready to make that change. Susi is a pioneer in the areas of movement, longevity and again – she is translating an ancient language of yoga into a language that the western world can understand – and that is global impact.

– Ray

Building A Future

Meet our yoga therapist: Sharyl is an Ashtanga yoga practitioner and teacher. She developed back pain as a result of her practice and was looking for a solution. In 2013, she completed Susi’s Therapeutic Yoga Intensive, How to Make $50K, and in 2014 enrolled in Functional Synergy’s IAYT Accredited Yoga Therapy Certification Program.

Her wish list:

  • Return to Ashtanga Yoga
  • Build a yoga therapy business while maintaining the balance of family

What she completed at Functional Synergy:

  • Therapeutic Yoga Intensive;
  • How to Make $50 K” Yoga Business Program;
  • Currently enrolled in Functional Synergy’s Yoga Therapy Certification Program, and the Learn To Mentor Program.

What she learned that transformed her practice and her business:

  • Anyone can gave give you an exercise to do for the sake of an exercise but the difference when you work with your neuro-muscular system means you actually reach the goal you’ve set for yourself.
  • Susi teaches you to play into your strengths rather than pushing yourself into a place where you aren’t able to go.
  • In Susi’s business training course, she sets in place a year-long support mentor system so after you’ve built new routines into your life for a year, they stay in place after the year is over.
  • Susi helps you to structure your life in a way that you use what’s already in place and working for you and you make more money doing what you are doing.

Meet Sharyl today:

Sharyl has developed a sustainable part-time yoga therapy practice which she balances with raising her 2 daughters. When she started working with Susi, she had no private clients and within 18 months built her client base to 6 clients per week. She is now integrating the yoga therapy concepts she learned from Susi back into the Ashtanga yoga system.

What sets Susi apart is her understanding of human nature and her understanding of how to change a human life, in a consistent, ongoing way, holding your hand at first and then letting go of you hand when you’re able to move ahead. – Sharyl

Getting Out of Pain

Meet our Yoga Therapy Client: Loretta is 50 +, married with adult children. She was referred by her personal injury lawyer and her dentist for TMJ issues, headaches, and full body pain related to a car accident.

Her wish list:

  • get out pain.
  • get rid of headaches.
  • feel better.

What she learned that transformed her recovery process:

Physio says “this is the exercise you must do to address the pain” whereas Susi says, this is the muscle, this is how the other muscles have compensated/taken over, and here is what you need to do—in your circumstance — to make a difference.

I learned how to strengthen certain muscles and use the proper muscles to support my body’s movement.

Meet Loretta today:

My headaches have disappeared, and I have better definition in my shoulders, arms (and people actually notice). I have learned how muscles are used and how they work together. I am now committed to yoga because I know more of what my body is capable of doing.

Susi’s able to see what others cannot see, she gives you your confidence back (physically and emotionally). As a result, exercise is no longer a chore of me and I am getting stronger – even in my life. – Loretta
